Teacher Professional Learning Workshops
Over the course of a day, this professional learning workshop will guide you in composition and safe dance practices from Kindergarten to Year 6, Years 7-10 or Years 11 -12 cover stages of learning.
Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub provides classes, workshops and intensive programs in schools, for community groups, young people and primary and secondary teachers. We have qualified dance specialist teachers that can provide a program that will suit your needs.
Secondary Teacher Professional Learning
These workshops adopt a practical approach to Professional Learning for secondary dance teachers. Professional Learning enables teachers to prepare students to meet the demands of current dance curriculum and to build knowledge and gain skills in current contemporary practices, technique and composition.
This will be a practical day of choreographic, games and movement development ideas that you can use in the classroom or for creating your next dance work.
Primary Teacher Professional Learning
Based in contemporary dance practice, composition and creativity, Professional Learning workshops for primary teachers will provide teachers with a toolbox of ideas to use in the classroom.
This will not be a workshop where you will all learn the same dance routine, but will be an engaging way to teach choreographic devices ( the way your students will) and new approaches to choreographic design.
Based on creativity, student ownership and empowerment, this workshop will provide you with a toolbox of composition ideas working with the elements of time, space and dynamics leading to the creation of composition based on thematic ideas. Here you will learn ways to allow the students to be the Choreographers, and you the Director.
The approach I take is inclusivity, where every person can dance and create. Dance is a medium for self expression, build confidence and self esteem in a safe and nurturing environment. Where there is no wrong choice.
So pull on your tracksuit pants and learn some fun and engaging ways to incorporate dance into the classroom.
FACILITATOR:
CADI MCCARTHY (Founder & Director Catapult dance) has been actively engaged in dance as a professional dancer, choreographer, educator and director. Cadi holds a Masters in Education, Diploma of Education (Secondary) and (Further Education & Training), and a BA Dance.
In 2014, Cadi founded Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub in Newcastle. In 2018 Catapult dance received Triennial funding from the City of Newcastle to develop its Propel Choreographic & Multi-Disciplinary residency program & Catapult Company. In 2017 Catapult’s youth initiative: The Flipside Project was the recipient of an Australian Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Youth Dance. Cadi also lectures at the Newcastle University in creative and performing arts.
In 2017 Cadi was the recipient of of the NSW Mid-Career Regional Arts Fellowship and 2017 Australian Council for the Arts project funding to develop a new professional dance theatre work: That Place In Between in partnership with the Civic Theatre, Newcastle presented in the subscription season in October 2018.
Between 2009 – 2013, Cadi was the Artistic Director of Buzz Dance Theatre, WA. With the company she created 9 full-length works for a variety of age groups including Look the Other Way which received a 2014 Australian Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Youth and Community Dance, Restless, Fragile, Goodbye Jamie Boyd (collaboration with Monkey Baa Theatre Company) and Stop! don’t Blink.
The community programs she established with the company include: the largest Artist in Residence Grant (AIR) in Australia, collaboration with Southern Edge Arts: Albany, the Big Stretch program that was awarded the 2010 Outstanding Achievement in Community/ Regional Dance at the WA Dance Award and the 2010 Arts and Aboriginal Health Award, the community partnership program with the Metropolitan Migrant Resource Centre and Aranmore College, and collaborations with the Michael Leslie Foundation (Pilbara).
She has also been the education consultant for the Queensland Ballet and the Western Australian Ballet 2009 – 2010
Previous to this position, Cadi danced with Paige Gordon and Performance Group (1996 – 1998) and with Buzz Dance Theatre (1998–2002). She created the independent company Cadi McCarthy & Company in the ACT in 2002, where she created 6 full length works including Awkward, Shambles and Grappling for the Edge.With the company she was the Recipient of a 2004 & 2006 Canberra Critics Circle Awards.
As the recipient of a 2007 Churchill Fellowship, Cadi spent time working with dance companies in Denmark, UK, Germany, USA, and Canada. In the same year she was awarded a residency at Chez Bushwick in New York. In 2009 Cadi travelled to Taiwan as the Australian Delegate of the World Dance Alliance, International Youth Choreographic Project.
Cadi has been engaged with the education sector delivering dance programs, workshops and residencies across all age groups: primary, secondary & tertiary.
She is a specialist in creating and implementing dance programs for students at risk and with special needs. She has been active in the delivery of professional development workshops for teachers and critically engaged in arts curriculum writing in the ACT and WA.
Cadi was a Key Practical and Written Examiner for the WACE Yr 11/12 Curriculum 2009 – 2014. She has also taken on the role of Key Writer, Peer Appraiser, and Final Checker of the WACE curriculum.
Cadi was also an independent panellist on the WACE K – 6, Dance curriculum, and advisor for the Yr 7 – 10 Dance curriculum.
She was a key writer of the ACT BSSS Yr 11/12 Dance curriculum review in 2008, and a panellist for the Every Chance to Learn dance curriculum in the ACT.
She has also choreographed on youth dance companies: QL2 (Canberra) and Steps (Perth), was the Dance Director of the ACT Education Departments: Showpod Showcase, and the Director of the Ausdance Dance Festival (Canberra) for 3 years.
