Working with a Yolande Brown, former senior artist and original cast member of Terrain, we will explore this core appreciation prescribed work, from the perspectives of the creative team, while acknowledging the work of the Cultural consultants who guided the process. As a work that is often described as an homage to Country, this work is relevant to a number of learning areas, including Arts (dance, design, music), Humanities and Social Sciences.

This workshop will include film excerpts, presentation, discussion and practical tasks.

Frances Rings was born in Adelaide and is a descendant of the Kokatha people. A graduate of NAISDA Dance College, Frances performed for many years as a dancer with Bangarra, and has choreographed six works for the repertoire, several of which have received Helpmann and Australian Dance Awards. She has also created works for West Australian Ballet, Tasdance, Legs on the Wall, NAISDA Dance College and Leigh Warren & Dancers, as well as Kahawi Dance Theatre and Atamira Dance Company in New Zealand. In 2019, Frances was appointed Associate Artistic Director at Bangarra.

Yolande Brown is a descendent of the Bidjara clan in Central Queensland and is also of Celtic/French extraction. A Bangarra dancer from 1999 to 2015, Yolande has been involved in the creation and performance of many Bangarra repertoire pieces, touring across Australia and internationally. She has also choreographed for the company, most recently creting sections of the 2018 work Dark Emu – along with co-choreographers Bangarra’s Artistic Director Stephen Page and senior artist Daniel Riley.

In 2018, Yolande was appointed to the role of coordinator for Bangarra’s new digital archive Knowledge Ground and has been instrumental in developing the company’s professional learning program, Winhanga-rra.
